How does a well-loved prince, filial son, and protector of his people become the dastardly villain of a sageuk? Find out in Hwajung. See how it all started for Prince Gwanghae in this recap of episode 1. Our story of splendid politics begins one night with two soldiers on patrol. From their conversation, and the fact they have a map, they are clearly searching for something.

Suddenly one of the soldiers falls into a pit, which turns out to be more like an underground cavern. He is shocked to find a decayed corpse sitting in an upright position. The year is10 years after the Imjin war. For a bit of context, the Imjin war refers to the Japanese invasions of Korea from As it turns out there is a military camp not too far away, in an area near the border with Ming China.

Lee Deok Hyeong arrives at said camp looking mighty grim. He fears this will bring a bloody battle to the royal palace. Soldiers return to camp, dragging a wooden casket behind them, interrupting their conversation. At the site of Changdeok Palace, we get our first glimpse of Prince Gwanghae Cha Seung Won as he marvels at the soon-to-be reconstructed palace, which was partially destroyed during the Japanese invasions.

Although he mentions that His Majesty would like to see the construction finished as soon as possible, he sends the workers home early for Full Moon Day. Cut to Jeongneong Palace, the temporary palace after the Japanese invasions, where the young, rambunctious Princess Jeongmyeong is running away from her ladies-in-waiting. Whilst they call after her, thinking she is lost, the Queen happens to walk by and looks displeased that the Princess is misbehaving again.

The King questions his being at Changdeok, thinking he was there preparing to become the next king.

The rest of their conversation is mainly focused on the recent message from the Ming that once again Gwanghae has not been appointed Crown Prince because he is the son of a concubine, a declination that has been happening for 16 years!

But the King does not seem troubled by it. And as all good little sisters should, she greets her older brother. Gwanghae tells the Queen that before being a Crown Prince he is a brother to the Princess and Grand Prince, but she insists that there are rules to be followed in the palace.

Shortly afterwards, Gwanghae takes the Princess aside and tells her that when they are alone she can call him brother. Moving to the palace kitchen, we see a Court Lady Kim Kae Shi played by Kim Yeo Jin taking medicine for an illness we learn she has had for a while now. From the palace grounds to the streets, we focus in on two rival gangs, if you will. And, because boys will be boys, the game gets out of hand, leading to the destruction of many merchant stalls.

Our two fearless leaders try to make a quick getaway, but are caught. This is when we learn that the boys are actually the young masters of two noble households. As soon as their captors realize this, a new brawl breaks out as each law enforcement group attempts to protect their respective young master.

And speaking of law enforcement, the corpse found at the start of the episode has now been brought to the police bureau where they try to identify who it is. The Chief of Police is then called away by the Mayor, who claims there is something of dire importance they need to take care of.

That something turns out to be disciplining their sons.Hwajeong or Splendid Politicsdepending on your tolerance level premiered earlier this week on MBC, and hits the ground running—no small feat considering that it comparatively has all the time in the world to tell the story of Gwanghae, the man who became king, and presumably a whole bunch of other things.

All in all a solid if not densely packed first outing, not so much for the action fan as for the traditional one.

But he has to abandon his inspection of the palace when a eunuch informs him that envoys from Ming have arrived, bearing news that will undoubtedly ruin what was shaping up to be a decent day. So his chances of ever seeing the throne are zero. If not for this child, what could make me laugh?

The little princess pouts that her orabeoni won this round. While some suspicious medicine gets taken by a high ranking court lady in preparation for the full moon feast that evening, the marketplace sees a game of capture the flag being played by a group of rowdy young boys.

The would-be readers have other things to worry about, like the festival. Imhae brings these concerns to Gwanghae, wanting him to get as riled up about this injustice as he is, though Gwanghae is his usual calm, understanding self. But Imhae still tries to get through to him, affectionately calling him Honhis given name.

Their father must be planning something. They turn to see Princess Jeongmyeong standing before them, but end up blindsided into helping when she enlists them in her quest to evade authority. While the king turns out to be a sour sport during the drunken poet festivities where ministers take turns composing poems under a time constrainthis daughter ends up leading both In-woo and Joo-won within earshot of the gathering.

The ministers know this is a test of their loyalty, so King Seonjo can see where they side on the matter of his royal successor. One suggests acting first by storming the palace and killing the young Prince Yeongchang, but Gwanghae refuses, nearly in tears. Any good word about his son sends him into a tailspin of jealous hatred, and he similarly refuses to believe that Gwanghae is the most qualified for the throne. But, as Jung In-hong points out, Seonjo once thought him qualified enough to appoint him to the position of crown prince.

All of this Gwanghae hears, so when his father comes storming out, he desperately grabs on to the bottom of his robe and takes the blame for everything. That led to him being installed as crown prince, though still not out of respect—Seonjo only gave him that title during the war because it was too dangerous to give to any of his favorite sons. Even so, Gwanghae had done more than simply rise to the occasion—he fought in the battles himself to show the people that the royal court was protecting them, and eventually led Joseon to victory.

If only Princess Jeongmyeong had been born a boy, Seonjo laments, she would have been old enough to rule. Court Lady Kim acts as the royal taste tester for King Seonjo and his only defense against being poisoned. Yet a ray of hope shall still remain, the destined one who wields fire and possesses the purest of the bloodline will come to rule the land.

Just then, Princess Jeongmyeong wakes up from a terrible dream. Court Lady Kim returns to the kitchen late at night to take her poison medicine, only to cough up blood before she can take the next dose. Would that have served Your Majesty and the people?! The palace is thrown into uproar as everyone mobilizes to fetch the royal doctor, leaving Gwanghae to tend to his father while they wait. This interpretation tells of Gwanghae Cha Seung Won as the son of a concubine and secondary heir, who in his thirst for power, usurps the Crown and ousts his half-sister Jungmyung Lee Yeon Hee from the palace.

Its way much cool than the old one. If following the history, this drama will have a lot of political struggles during that time and a lot of action rather than romance. I hope they make this historical drama more interesting like Jumong and Yi San. I definitely watch it because all the casts are good.

Cha seung won. Its good to see u again in drama, after I watching 3 meals a day. You are a great chef and great actor. Just watched ep. Cha Seung Won character is the antagonist in this drama but I can understand why Prince Gwanghae has to take power during that time to stabilize the country. Adeul: i thought that in recorded history not just korea most kings were greedy in the guise of loving their people. Hwajung Fighting! Cha Seung Won Fighting!!

It is acting but still it is kinda odd to me.

They brought out the map and one of the soldiers walked forward a few steps and suddenly, he fell into a cave. Someone was sitting there, surrounded by books and papers but the white haired man was actually a skeleton. A man stood on a rock looking at the mountains and the vast sky, and this gentleman was Yi Deok-hyung Lee Sung-min!

The two soldiers were still alive and they rode the horses back to the envoy base camp set near the border of Ming-Joseon, bringing with them a box that looked like a coffin. Deok-hyung stared at a red box I assume it contained something important from Ming with a forlorn expression, but another gentleman, Yi Hang-bok Kim Seung-ok cheered him up, telling him to have some alcohol instead of sulking around.

Hang-bok was not an ounce worried, positive that it could be a new beginning.

A little girl ran away from her attendants and she was the young Princess Jungmyung. One spoon of soup later, the king stopped eating to question Gwanghae about his trip to Changdeok Palace. Seonjo was amused that the princess asked for the citizens to be given more straws since it was full moon, and pointed out to Gwanghae that Jungmyung was the only person who could make him happy.

Queen Inmok entered the place after hearing Jungmyung calling Gwanghae casually as brother instead of Crown Prince, and she saw the rejection message in front of Gwanghae. Although Gwanghae insisted that it was okay for Jungmyung to call him brother, the queen thought that the rules were there to be followed. So cute!
